I thought of something like this but it still requires manual  
intervention, I was hoping for something automated so that as soon as  
the gateway doesn't authenticate against the first username/pw (this  
may be anytime), the next username password is tried.

Something like (excuse the simplification) adding:
if not ppp-up
         set authname DSLb***@****.net
         set authkey ***b
fi

Interesting, I had a quick look, not sure if this will do it.
