Which model laptop? Which card controller chipset? ("dmesg" output, look
particularly for 'pcic0')
Typically problems are IRQ conflicts, you could try creating
/etc/pccard.conf with:
io 0x280-0x360
irq 5 9 10 11
debuglevel 9
(you need to kill -1 the pccardd process to get it to read any changes),
then experiment with different I/O ranges and/or interrupts.
