some things to check on:

1.  is the network cable plugged in?
2.  is your network card detected by the FreeBSD OS?
3.  what are your network configs in /etc/rc.conf like? if you could just
    post that section.
4.  what do your routes look like?
5.  is your firewall filtering icmp?
