Please very this line is in your /etc/rc.conf
hald_enabled="YES" to
/etc/rc.conf
xorg.conf
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "False"
EndSection
if you get a small resolution;
try this
X -configure followed by X -config
xorg.conf.new with -retro option

I did not choose gnome2 during installation considering that only gnome was available.
Meanwhile the output
for pkg_info -E gnome\* Xorg\* is as follows
gnome-doc-utils-0.16.1_1
gnome-mime-data-2.18.0_3
gnome-subr-1.0
gnomehier-2.3_12
Thanks,
Geraldine

I updated this before the CD was pressed...

But, as Patrick has noted, the gnome choices in the installer can
be
confusing (gnome-desktop vs. gnome2). The correct choice is "gnome2".
I just saw this error appear in Ubuntu 9.10 as well. The Intel i810
on-board video driver has caused issues. We had two machines crash
due to memory errors with the driver.
If you did choose "gnome2" at install time let us know. I have a few
more things you can try.
Cheers,
