Friends,
Below is the call for the two Diplo workshops in Malta in October: on
“Language and Influence” and “Protocol and Influence”. Since I had the
opportunity to listen to both Dr. Scott and Mr. Terribile lecturing, I
can only warmly recommend the workshops and encourage you to apply if
you are in position to participate.
Please forward further to your contacts that might be interested to participate.
Deadline for applications is 18 September.
Best!

Workshops information
The workshops 'Language and Influence' and 'Protocol and Etiquette',
organised by DiploFoundation, will take place in Malta between the 5th
and 10th October 2009. The workshops will be held consecutively in the
four star Cavalieri Hotel (Spinola Road, St. Julians).
The workshops provide training in language and protocol skills,
addressing both inter-personal and cross-cultural issues.
Due to the practical, personal, hands on nature of the workshops only
a limited number of participants will be accepted.
Objectives
Language and Influence ( 5 - 7 October 2009 ) provides participants
with a linguistic toolkit which will enable them to use - and defuse -
the most frequent tripwires of language, such as ambiguity, analogy,
definitions, connotations and inference. Although the course is run in
English, the lessons learned are applicable to all languages. Another
objective is to practise presentation skills. Participants will be
encouraged to hone the art of "brief, trenchant and, if possible,
witty" interventions.
Business Protocol and Etiquette ( 8 - 10 October 2009 ) helps business
executives learn how to deal gracefully with diplomats, professionals
and the public in general in a variety of settings. Participants will
analyse and practise skills that will give them an understanding of
the principles involved in cultivating relationships. Mastery of these
skills will also help to project a positive and respected image within
the business community. The course will teach the art of dining, the
basic concepts of international protocol and how to make a good first
impression.
Target Participants
The training programmes are aimed at business executives and
professionals in the private and public sector who wish to improve
their social and interpersonal skills when dealing with people from
different cultural backgrounds.
Faculty
Language and Influence: Dr Biljana Scott, Senior Lecturer in Political
Language and Public Diplomacy at DiploFoundation and a Faculty
Lecturer in Chinese Linguistics at the University of Oxford.
Business Protocol and Etiquette: Mr Olaph Terribile, Secretary to the
Presidency of the Republic of Malta and a regular lecturer at
DiploFoundation where he lectures on Protocol procedures including
practical exercises on etiquette.
