OpenLDAP is probably the best directory server. I haven't run it in a few years but it worked very well for Mac, Unix, and Linux a few years ago. Haven't tried using it with Windows.

Directory Server was Red Hat project under fedora called fedora directory
server (fedora-ds).
When he became stable, Red Hat implement it under RedHat Entreprise
Linux(RHEL) by renaming it to RedHat Directory Server (RHDS). Its' a
non-free package you must pay if you want to deploy it The best plateform is
RHEL.
