Just like Stephane's already said, I'm willing to bet my left big toe that
it's a TCP MSS problem.

Reminds me of problems I had once upon a time running WCCP with a Squid
box over a GRE tunnel (old Squid version, newer versions include GRE
support), would break access to sites such as Hotmail and Yahoo mail.
