i'm a personal fan of djbdns.  it includes an authoritative server
(tinydns) and a recursive resolver (dnscache).  i like the fact that
these are separate programs as it makes it easier to understand how
separate these functions are (and should be).  i like how secure the
code written by djb (djbdns, qmail, daemontools) is.  i like how fast
and simple they are.  i like his documentation
(http://cr.yp.to/djbdns.html) because it has common tasks, like 'run
an external cache for your network':
http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/run-cache-x.html that are straightforward and
easy to understand.

bind is more widely used and you may find others who know it well, in
which case it would be a better choice for you.
