Thanks for your reply. I have issued the command "sh vtp status"
and the output was as follows:

VTP Pruning Mode                : Disabled
VTP V2 Mode                     : Disabled

MD5 digest                      : 0x08 0x44 0x44 0xB7 0xC1 0x40 0x9B 0x1E
I am using 2590 "WS-C2950-24" with IOS C2950-I6Q4L2-M), Version 12.1(22)EA2
I am not sure if this is a limitation of the IOS or the HW.
