In addition: is the MX record for the domain pointing to the right place? If
there are multiple MX records, have *all* the target servers been configured
to accept mail for that domain?

The bounce message *should* have included the IP address of the machine
which gmail was talking SMTP to when it got a 554 response. If it doesn't,
then find a better mail system to send your test message from. Check that
the IP address is the address of your mail server. Or, check in your mail
logs that you are seeing connections from gmail and rejecting attempted
deliveries.
