Please what is the need for the next-hop-self line in the BGP config

i will try to see how I can tell them not to use ip unnumbered. In the case that we will use a /30 for the link and they are not ready to supply the /30 for the link from their address space, what are the pros and cons if I supply the /30 from my own address space?
Also, is it my serial0 interface that currently has the unnumbered that will use my part of the /30? The /30 on my ethernet interface presently has the .1 on the ethernet interface and .2 on my DVB receiver.
thanks

this will be configured as
no neighbor 213.118.132.2
neighbor 213.118.132.2 remote-as NNN
neighbor 213.118.132.2 password
neighbor 213.118.132.2 version 4
neighbor 213.118.132.2 next-hop-self
neighbor 213.118.132.2 soft-reconfiguration inbound
! and some sort of maps and filters
neighbor 213.118.132.2 route-map ebgp-out out
neighbor 213.118.132.2 route-map ebgp-in in
neighbor 213.118.132.2 distribute-list 180 out
neighbor 213.118.132.2 distribute-list 180 in

yikes! aside from not liking unnumbered, this is using the ip
address from isp-1 as the ip address for isp-2. very very
sick.
but anyway, they need to tell you the ip address configured
on their end.
but again, don't use unnumbered.
