RE: i need help
You
don't need SNMP to enable VoIP services on your network. SNMP is simply a
management protocol that can provide you with statistical data on your
router's performance, and any other SNMP-enabled devices on your
network.
VoIP
is the transmission of voice frames on atraditional IP network, either your LAN,
WAN or the Internet. It's basically a packet switched voice service, as opposed
to the legacy circuit switched networks from our local
PSTN's.
Setting up VoIP requires some special hardware and
software configurations on a router, including catering for other parameters
such as whether you will need an H.323 gateway, what kind of signalling you will
use [E&M, CCS or the older CAS], whether you have HDNMs [High Density
Network Modules] such as an E-1/T-1 controller with on-board PVDMs [Packet Voice
Density Modules].
It
takes alot more to configure your routers and network for VoIP, but it's not
difficult. With the right MIBs, SNMP will simply give your graphical data on the
performance of your voice components,. such as, how many calls you handle every
5 minutes, how many DSPs are used relative to how many calls you make/receive,
and generally, how much bandwidth you are using on your IP network to handle
these calls. However, it can also be used to make configuration changes on
your router, and other SNMP-enabled devices, although I would
recommend this.
