Better is 1777 (stops other people deleting your temp files)
You could try running mutt under ktrace:
$ ktrace mutt
then do a 'kdump | less'. There will be vast amounts of stuff, but a good
thing to look for is 'open' or 'write' calls which fail.
When done: rm ktrace.out
You mention a 'web interface' - what is it? Does it talk directly to
/var/mail/xxx or ~user/Maildir, or does it talk to a POP3/IMAP daemon, if so
what is it that?
