Actually, it turns out it's not free after all. Their suggestion that their
licence is "better than free" is nonsense.

Because it's not free, IMO it's dangerous to start dismantling it and using
the source code components in the way Noah suggests. Even if you qualify for
the exemption from payment, I think you'd be wise not to commit yourself to
using software which they could start charging you for at any time in the
future.

There are many other truly free alternatives. "Netsaint" is pretty good.
"Nocol" is rather old but still does the job. Both are genuinely free.
