Have you checked your seetings in /etc/rc.conf and /etc/defaults/rc.conf?
Keep in mind that the settings in /etc/rc.conf override those in
/etc/defaults/rc.conf.
The easiest way for you would be to run /stand/sysinstall select the
option that says "do post install configuration" and then select network
configuration.
btw what do you get when you do ifconfig?
