addressing issues that confront the future of the Internet, serves as
the organizational home for the groups responsible for Internet
infrastructure standards, acts as a global clearinghouse for Internet
information and education, and facilitates and coordinates
Internet-related initiatives around the world focused on enabling
access, building InterNetWorks, and ensuring trust and identity.

About the Position:

The Regional Bureaus are integral hubs in ISOC’s work, helping to build
capacity where it is needed, mobilize local support for global efforts,
and develop policy and educational awareness. They serve as vital
conduits, interconnecting ISOC's staff, Chapters, and Organizational and
Individual members around topical regional and local issues. Bureaus are
instrumental in building awareness of ISOC's commitment to regional
Internet communities and understanding and addressing local issues
important to Internet development. ISOC maintains five Regional Bureaus
around the world.

Reporting to the Sr. Development Manager for Africa & Middle East, the
Internet Development Manager for Africa will execute on-the-ground
implementation and project management support for ISOC projects aimed at
fostering Internet growth in Africa. This new position within the
Internet Society will be based in Africa and is part of the African
Regional Bureau.

Responsibilities:

•	Execute on-the-ground implementation and project management support
for ISOC projects aimed at fostering Internet growth in Africa,
including key aspects of ISOC’s African interconnection and traffic
exchange programme.
•	Organize, lead and conduct a range of Internet technical trainings,
workshops and stakeholder discussions in order to advance networking
skills, Internet operational knowledge, and the use of Internet best
practices in Africa.
•	Create innovative approaches, materials, and tools to enhance the
delivery and effectiveness of current programmes, and develop new
project concepts to advance ISOC initiatives in the region.
•	Evaluate and assess project results to ensure activities are achieving
intended outcomes.
•	Develop partnerships with African Internet community in order to
identify capacity building needs and facilitate regional Internet
collaboration, information sharing and problem sharing.
•	Provide visible leadership and promote the adoption of sound Internet
practices to various stakeholder groups, including network operators,
government representatives, business leaders, and technical engineers,
among others.


Desired Qualifications:

•	Must be a self-starter with a passion for the Internet, eager to work
and learn in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural environment.
•	5+ years experience in Internet network and systems administration
managing technical and operational aspects of a medium to large-scale
network (i.e. university, ISP, government network, or similar) in a Unix
or Linux environment.
•	Solid understanding of Internet architecture, design and technologies,
including demonstrated operational experience in the following:
o	Advanced Internet routing and switching protocol configurations
including BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, VLANs, and STP, among others
o	Internet infrastructure and system installations and configurations
including IPv4/IPv6, Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs), and multihoming
o	Network monitoring tools and analysis such as MRTG, Cacti, Nagios,
NFSEN, and flow-tools
o	Domain name service (DNS) structure and configurations.  Knowledge of
DNS security extensions (DNSSEC) concepts and implementations would be
of added advantage.
•	Solid knowledge of Internet peering and transit principles. Direct
experience managing and negotiating peering and transit relationships
for local, regional, and/or international connectivity is highly desirable.
•	Experience working with or participating at Internet exchange point(s)
will be of significant advantage.
•	Solid reputation within the African Internet community required.  Must
have familiarity with and preferably a history of direct participation
in key African Internet community bodies such as AfNOG, AfriNIC, AfTLD,
etc.
•	Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, with demonstrated
ability in developing positive working relationships and partnerships
with local, regional, and international colleagues.
•	Persuasive, well-organized and compelling presenter with the
confidence, skill and ability to explain complex Internet concepts in a
clear and engaging way to a variety of audiences, including non-experts,
business managers, policy makers, and technologists.
•	Prior experience teaching Internet technical and operational concepts
to network operations staff in a classroom/workshop setting is highly
desirable.
•	Must be able to complete tasks independently and effectively outside a
formal office setting and in remote locations, and effectively manage
multiple projects with close attention to detail.
•	Expertise and prior experience in project management highly desirable
•	Ability and willingness to travel frequently within Africa and
internationally.
•	Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English required.
 Additionally, competency in French highly preferred.

Compensation for this position will be competitively commensurate with
the successful applicant’s qualifications.
