Hi Benjamin,

Sorry that I can not read what suggested in the link provided from you search.
I don't know if you have a file /etc/xorg.conf in Ubuntu.  If so, commenting  a 
line with 

Modes  "800x600"  might work.

Dear All,

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. Everything worked except the monitor 
display which defaulted to 800x600 (not good). I need something like 1280x800

After searching google, and trying all suggested comments

 it still did not work

I have attached my dmesg file so that someone with an idea on how to fix this 
could help.
