[afnog] Monitor ethernet bandwidth utilisation on Cisco switch

Hi 

I am using Cacti with weathermap which allows you to create a logical
graphical representation of your network topology.
On this I am specify the bandwidth of each link and I am able to see the
percentage utilization / traffic load of the link and rolling my mouse over
a node or a link will give me a bandwidth utilization graph of that link or
node

I have also done a lot of customization on the cacti to suit my needs and as
for bandwidth management we used to use ET Bandwidth manager which is good
for a small IP Network but if you are running a bigger network or having
MPLS core then you will find that ET Bandwidth manager is not able to read
MPLS Labeled Packets. I am currently doing the bandwidth management on my
Access Wimax Network for Corporate customers and using Cisco SCE for my
consumer market as their traffic terminates on a Cisco 7206 VXR PDSN.

MRTG and Cacti will give your graphical analysis on the amount of bandwidth
consumed on  port/interface. The use SNMP protocol to gather information on
the device status by polling it on a given interval . 

If you wish to limit amount of bandwidth on a port, look at ""rate-limit"
cisco command

If you wish to control your LAN traffic, you should consider setting up a
proxy server (squid).

For monitoring, I recommend using SNMP with MRTG or Cacti.

For bandwidth management, well, depending on the type of 
Cisco switch, the QoS features available to the platform 
will determine how granular you can manage the bandwidth.

More features translates to higher cost, as Cisco Catalyst 
switches typically forward traffic (and perform QoS) in 
hardware.

In my experience, some QoS features in Cisco switches 
(particularly the desktop models) may appear, but don't

 
actually take once configured.

Perhaps you may explain, further, what it is you are trying 
to achieve. Are you trying to manage LAN bandwidth, or do 
you want to use the switch to control the amount of 
bandwidth your users get to the Internet?

Do you plan to use the switch as a Layer 3 device (so-called 
Layer 3 switch)?
