[afnog] .KE now on v6

Hi All,

Lucy had requested me to post a short case study of how we deployed
IPv6 at KENIC...which I'm glad to do:

In a nutshell;

Pre-requisites (Equipment)
Equipment need to be IPv6 ready:
	* depending on the equipment, memory upgrades may be necessary
	* routers require an IOS that can talk v6
	** Amount of time and cost depends on the kind (and number)
equipment one has.

	* servers/workstations need to be running an OS that supports IPv6.
Most operating systems (~4-5 years old) support v6.

Acquiring IPv6 Space
Depends on the kind of organisation. In the AfriNIC region, we have
two kinds of allocation/assignment.
	* PA space for LIR's (http://www.afrinic.net/docs/policies/afpol-
v6200407-000.htm) and
	* PI space for end-sites (http://www.afrinic.net/docs/policies/afpol-
v6200701.htm)

Transit
You need to discuss this with your upstream provider as part of the
planning process. If they don't provide IPv6 transit, then you can
discuss with them the possibility of creating a tunnel to their
upstream (the upstream of your upstream). You might also consider
directly discussing with the upstream of your upstream for the same.
Jordi can also assist in creating a tunnel to third party networks,
for instance to the OCCAID network (http://www.occaid.org/).

HowTo
* The AfriNIC IPv6 workshop material (http://www.afrinic.net/training/
index.htm#materials) provides useful documentation on deployment of
IPv6.

* In addition, the afripv6-discuss mail exploder (https://
lists.afrinic.net/mailman/listinfo.cgi/afripv6-discuss) is a valuable
resource. I urge anyone planning to deploy v6 to join this and other
similar lists - the archives contain useful discussions.

Remarks
The entire process greatly depends on the kind and number of
equipment on ones' network. The idea is start the planning process as
soon as possible.

This might not be a very comprehensive report but we are readily
available to respond to more direct questions and to assist where we
can.

Regards,

-Vincent
