Phil,
Here is my httpd.conf. I did n't use apache13+modssl and I was able to connect using http://www before I added SSL.

Yes it's possible, but we will need to see your httpd.conf --
Did you use apache13+modssl ? Another version of apache ?
What about the httpd.conf -- does it tell apache to listen
on port 80 ? etc...
