dovecot is your answer.

It can even hook into postfix's SASL auth mech:
http://www.postfix.org/SASL_README.html

Does IMAP4, POP3, SSL, is very fast, great design, very flexible, it's
coded by Timo Sirainen (of irssi fame :), documentation is also great:

For Migrating: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Migration
And of course the rest of it: http://wiki.dovecot.org/

Proof that it works in very large setups:

(Gotta love the folks from Xs4all:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/DovecotServerInstallations/FreeBSD/4.10/500000Users

Or more in your size 20k users on 1 Xeon3.2Ghz + 2Gb:
http://wiki.dovecot.org/DovecotServerInstallations/DebianUbuntu/20kActiveUsers

Which would mean you have room to spare for double the amount of users.

Enjoy, like a lot of other people do :)

Greets,
 Jeroen
