You don't have to poll an IMAP server if it supports the Enhanced IDLE
function (RFC 2177); rather, the server will notify the client when new mail
has arrived.

This does depend on both client and server supporting this of course. I
believe courier-imap is supposed to support it, but relies on FAM / GAMIN to
get notifications from the kernel about filesystem changes, and that can be
tricky to get working. I don't know about cyrus, nor whether typical PDAs
user it.

Anyway, just thought it was worth a mention as an option.
