i  brought down RELENG_5 first,  which when i built my kernel gave me
FreeBSD 5.5 Prerelease. i rolled back and brought down RELENG_5_4

Read /usr/src/UPDATING and see if there's anything specific to your problem.


 i saw somethng that  may help there. a list of removed rc.d scripts that
should be removed and a run of mergemaster -i,  but those  files are not
there in my /etc/rc.d

actually i ran it, just forgot to put it  in the list of commands that i
had  given.


What exactly does your rc.conf have in for devd_enable? The warning message
> you see comes from /etc/rc.subr:


this is what is puzzling me, what i have in my rc.conf file is very
different from what is being reported. actually all that is being dumped on
screen does not exist in my rc.conf file. and my rc.conf file does not get
loaded at all.
