What file system are you running?

Have you tried booting off the CD's and loading the 
kernel on the CD and select the "Boot installed system" 
option? Normally, it will ask you to define the root 
partition e.g., /hda1, /hda2, /sda1, e.t.c; or it could 
show you the currently installed partitions and you'd 
need to select your root partition.
