Hi,

Just have a query about some interesting behaviour of DiG 8.3 which seems
to happen when when it's requested to query a name server that has an IPv6
address. See the transcript of activities below:

beg_g at pop:~ > dig ns.ripe.net a
; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> ns.ripe.net a
<snip>
ns.ripe.net.            15h39m39s IN A  193.0.0.193
<snip>

beg_g at pop:~ > dig ns.ripe.net aaaa
; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> ns.ripe.net aaaa
<snip>
ns.ripe.net.            5h26m5s IN AAAA  2001:610:240:0:53::193
<snip>

What's interesting is the query below works fine on one server:

beg_g at pop:~ > dig @ns.ripe.net. ug. soa

; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> @ns.ripe.net. ug. soa
; (2 servers found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:

                                        4H )            ; minimum
<snip>

But not on another server:

beg_g at gemini:~ > dig @ns.ripe.net. ug. soa

; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> @ns.ripe.net. ug. soa
; (2 servers found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; res_nsend: Protocol not supported
beg_g at gemini:~ >

A bit more information about the two servers:

beg_g at gemini:~ > uname -a
FreeBSD gemini.cfi.co.ug 4.11-STABLE FreeBSD 4.11-STABLE #0: Thu Mar 31
23:29:03 EAT 2005     ebans@:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/MYKERNEL1  i386
beg_g at gemini:~ >

beg_g at pop:~ > uname -a
FreeBSD pop.eahd.or.ug 4.10-STABLE FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE #0: Thu Sep  2
11:48:57 GMT 2004
beg_g at pop.eahd.or.ug:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/POP.AUG092004  i386
beg_g at pop:~ >

Any clues?

Gerald.
