(mrtg - but you have installed prtg?)

PRTG is not free.

For the kind of error you're getting, it appears that your "prtg" may
not be liking the snmp version on your router, or, you have not
properly setup your "prtg"

You seem to prefer the GUI way, so, i recommend cacti (www.cacti.net).
Its kind of a "front-end" to rrdtool.
